Nairobi, Kenya – August 25, 2024: In a move that has sparked fresh interest in Kenya’s political landscape, President William Ruto has appointed former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria as a senior adviser within the Council of Economic Advisors. The appointment, announced by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, aims to reinforce the implementation of the Bottom-Up Economic Agenda, a cornerstone of Ruto's administration.

A New Role for Moses Kuria

Kuria's appointment comes just weeks after he was excluded from Ruto’s reconstituted Cabinet, a decision that caught many by surprise. However, this new advisory role signifies Ruto’s continued confidence in Kuria’s abilities, particularly in guiding the government's economic strategies.

Kuria, known for his bold political moves and outspoken nature, expressed his gratitude towards Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua shortly before the appointment was announced. In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Kuria thanked Gachagua for his support during a transitional period and hinted at his aspirations for the future.

“To my brother DP Rigathi Gachagua. Thank you for your kind words. Indeed God has His own designs. I am a believer. I strongly trust that He will make me the current Mt Kenya kingpin and the 6th President of the Republic of Kenya. Asante Ndugu,” Kuria wrote.

Gachagua’s Support and Call for Unity

Deputy President Gachagua, speaking at a funeral in Githunguri alongside Kuria, emphasized that one chapter’s end often leads to new opportunities. He encouraged Kuria to remain optimistic, suggesting that his political journey was far from over.

"My brother Moses Kuria, relax. Hakuna mlango wanafunga bila kufungua ingine (No door closes without another opening). We wish you well," Gachagua said, underscoring the importance of unity in the Mt Kenya region for the sake of its development.

A Shift in the Political Landscape

Kuria’s transition from Cabinet Secretary to a senior adviser on economic affairs highlights the dynamic nature of Kenya’s political scene. As a member of Ruto's first Cabinet, Kuria played a significant role in shaping the administration’s early policies. His new role on the Council of Economic Advisors will allow him to continue influencing the government’s economic agenda, albeit from a different vantage point.

The Council of Economic Advisors is a critical body within Ruto’s government, tasked with providing expert advice on economic policy and ensuring that the Bottom-Up Economic Agenda is effectively implemented. Kuria’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his experience and political acumen to drive this agenda forward.

Looking Ahead

As Moses Kuria steps into his new role, the political spotlight remains on how he will contribute to the ongoing efforts to bolster Kenya’s economy. His departure from the Cabinet was a significant shake-up, but this advisory position offers him a platform to continue his influence within the government.

For President Ruto, the appointment is also a signal of his commitment to maintaining a broad-based government that incorporates diverse voices and expertise. As the administration continues to push its economic plans, the inclusion of seasoned politicians like Kuria in advisory roles could be key to achieving its goals.

With Kuria’s future aspirations clearly articulated, his journey within Kenyan politics is far from over. His role in the Council of Economic Advisors may well be a stepping stone to further ambitions, as he has already hinted at his desire to become the Mt Kenya kingpin and, eventually, the President of Kenya.
