Nairobi, Kenya – August 27, 2024: President William Ruto has unveiled a dedicated secretariat tasked with leading Raila Odinga’s campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. Speaking during the official launch of Raila’s candidacy at State House, Nairobi, Ruto announced that the secretariat would be led by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Singóei and former Kenyan Ambassador to the United States, Elkanah Odembo.
A Pan-African Team
The secretariat will include members from all five regions of Africa, reflecting the campaign’s commitment to Pan-Africanism and unity across the continent. "To assist in making the case for Raila Odinga, I also unveil the secretariat which will be led by Kenya's Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Singóei and Ambassador Elkanah Odembo. It will also include a diverse membership drawn from five regions of the African Union," Ruto stated.
A Mission to Serve All Africans
President Ruto emphasized that the role of the secretariat is to serve the entire African continent, bringing people and nations closer together. “The assignment we are called upon to undertake at the African Union is the work of all Africans for all Africans and a noble course to bring our people and nations in touch with the glorious future we all deserve,” he said.
With the official launch of his candidacy, Raila Odinga now begins the critical phase of reaching out to other African countries to secure their support in the upcoming AUC elections, scheduled for February next year.
Facing Strong Competition
Raila will be competing against Djibouti's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Youssouf, Anil Gayan from Mauritius, and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar. The race for the AUC chairmanship is expected to be closely contested, with candidates from across the continent vying for the influential role.
As the campaign moves forward, the newly announced secretariat will play a pivotal role in coordinating efforts, building alliances, and advocating for Raila’s vision for a united and prosperous Africa.
