Sakaja Appeals for Patience as Probe into MCA Munuve's Death Continues

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has dismissed growing public speculation surrounding the mysterious death of Kariobangi North Member of County Assembly (MCA) Joel Munuve, urging the public and political figures alike to await the outcome of an official autopsy and investigation.
Speaking during a televised interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, April 24, Sakaja expressed his condolences while warning against politicizing the tragic loss, which occurred just days after the late MCA publicly declared intentions to file an impeachment motion against the Governor.
“Death is not something we should trivialize or turn into a political tool. MCA Munuve was passionate and principled, but let’s not jump to conclusions,” Sakaja stated, clarifying that the autopsy report would be released shortly to shed light on the cause of death.
Mystery Surrounds MCA’s Death Following Impeachment Threats
Joel Munuve, a prominent and outspoken Nairobi County legislator, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 22, after collapsing at his ward office in Nairobi. He was rushed to a private hospital along Kiambu Road but succumbed while undergoing treatment. His untimely passing has since been met with a flurry of speculation, especially in light of his recent political standoff with Governor Sakaja.
Just days before his death, Munuve had appeared in viral videos accusing Sakaja of mismanaging county funds and vowing to initiate an impeachment process. “We need a forensic audit. How can one person afford 17 vehicles with public funds?” he had questioned.
Champion for Transparency and Social Services
Munuve had built a reputation as a vocal watchdog within the Nairobi County Assembly. Beyond his impeachment threats, he had recently filed requests for detailed statements regarding the “Dishi na County” school feeding program and pushed for the re-nationalization of Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital due to what he termed as "dire service levels."
He had written directly to President William Ruto and senior national government officials highlighting alleged failings at the facility and demanding action. His persistent advocacy often placed him at odds with the county leadership, further intensifying the public’s scrutiny of his sudden demise.
Officials Call for Due Process
Despite the political tension, leaders from across the spectrum have urged caution and respect for due process. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko joined the chorus of condolences, describing Munuve as a principled leader who remained committed to the people of Kariobangi North.
Governor Sakaja reiterated his administration’s commitment to a transparent investigation. “A comprehensive autopsy is already underway, and we’ll let the results guide the next steps. Let’s respect the family and the law,” he stated.
