President William Ruto has praised Kenyan athletes for their stellar performances at the 2025 Boston Marathon, calling the country's clean sweep of the podium in both the men's and women’s races a proud moment in Kenya's sporting history.
John Korir emerged as the standout performer by clinching the men’s title in one of the fastest times ever recorded at the Boston Marathon. President Ruto described Korir’s win as “a historic milestone in world athletics,” adding that his resilience and determination set an example for the next generation of champions.
“Well done, John Korir, for your remarkable victory,” Ruto stated. “Your performance demonstrated the resilience, determination and spirit that define champions.”
Ruto also recognized Cyprian Kotut, who finished third in the men’s category. “Bravo, Cyprian Kotut, for securing third position and proudly flying the Kenyan flag high,” said the President. Kotut’s continued excellence in long-distance events has made him a dependable figure in Kenyan athletics.
The women’s marathon was a display of Kenyan dominance, with Sharon Lokedi delivering a breathtaking performance to claim first place and set a new course record. Ruto celebrated her triumph, saying, “Congratulations Sharon Lokedi for winning the women’s race and setting a new course record. This is a personal triumph and a national victory.”
Hellen Obiri Reinforces Kenya’s Long-Distance Legacy
Veteran runner Hellen Obiri took second place in a competitive women’s field, further strengthening Kenya’s global reputation in athletics. “Well done to Hellen Obiri for finishing second and cementing Kenya’s stature as a global athletics powerhouse,” said Ruto.
