A bold
claim by Kileleshwa MCA and ODM insider Robert Alai has sparked speculation
about President William Ruto’s political future, suggesting he could contest
the 2027 elections under the ODM banner. Alai proposed that Ruto disband his
United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and have its members join the opposition
party, ODM, to defend his presidency.
“UDA
should be dissolved, and all its members registered under ODM. President Ruto
must defend his seat through ODM,” Alai declared on Sunday.
The
remarks are set to ignite political debates, given the uneasy alliance between
Ruto and his former rival, ODM leader Raila Odinga. While the two have grown
closer, insiders from both camps often issue conflicting signals about their
partnership ahead of the 2027 polls.
Raila has
repeatedly stated that ODM remains outside the government and may field its own
candidate in 2027, a stance backed by party stalwarts like Secretary General
Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo.
Meanwhile,
Ruto has hinted at a long-term alliance with ODM. During a Saturday event, he
playfully chided Sifuna for his criticisms of the government, reminding him of
Ruto’s roots as an ODM co-founder.
“Sifuna,
when you talk about me, remember I’m a founding member of ODM, so watch your
step,” Ruto quipped. “If you push too far, I’ll call a founders’ meeting, and
we can discipline you. Let’s tread carefully.”
Alai’s
comments highlight the evolving dynamics between Ruto and Odinga, raising
questions about whether their newfound camaraderie could reshape Kenya’s
political landscape.
