Nairobi, Kenya – August 27, 2024: Raila Odinga, Kenya’s candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC), has unveiled his vision for the continent’s future, expressing his readiness to serve with unwavering dedication. Speaking during the official unveiling of his candidacy at State House, Nairobi, Raila emphasized the importance of unity, strategic action, and the transformation of Africa into a global powerhouse.

A Pan-African Journey

Raila began his speech by acknowledging the collective support from Kenya and the Eastern Africa region, which he described as both encouraging and humbling. He highlighted the significance of his candidacy, calling it a major milestone in his long-standing commitment to the Pan-African cause.

“I am greatly honoured and want to thank all of you for your solidarity with Kenya as demonstrated by your presence. Today, as a candidate for the AUC chairperson, I am personally encouraged and humbled by the collective support from my country and the Eastern Africa region,” Raila stated.

Africa’s Resilience and Challenges

Reflecting on Africa’s tumultuous history, Raila spoke of the continent’s journey from the dark days of slavery, colonialism, and internal conflicts to its current status as a rising force on the global stage. He acknowledged the challenges that still plague Africa, including identity conflicts, poverty, youth unemployment, and climate change, but stressed that these obstacles can be overcome through collective effort and visionary leadership.

“Even as we rise, our continent still grapples with emerging challenges and vulnerabilities... I plan to work with you and make the AU more people-centred and serve the interests of the vast voiceless majority of Africans. The African people should feel the AU in their lives,” Raila declared.

A Vision for a United Africa

Raila emphasized the need for a united Africa, free from the divisions imposed by colonial borders and languages. He spoke passionately about his dream of a continent where people are connected by shared values and a common vision for the future.

“We are one people who, unfortunately, are trying too hard to separate from each other. I dream of an Africa where those borders and colonial languages no longer divide us,” he said, urging for greater integration and cooperation across the continent.

Strategic Leadership and Continental Integration

Raila outlined his plan to bring a strategic approach to leadership at the AUC, balancing policy with the complex geopolitics of the continent. He stressed the importance of setting clear goals and understanding the political dynamics that influence the outcomes of these goals.

“Throughout my leadership and service to the public, I have noted the significance of defining strategic goals and appreciating the influence of political dynamics on the outcomes of these goals,” Raila noted.

A Call to Action

As he concluded his speech, Raila made a heartfelt appeal to his fellow Africans, particularly those from Eastern Africa, to support his candidacy. He emphasized that his bid is not just about personal ambition but about serving the continent and realizing a shared vision for Africa’s future.

“My selection to be Kenya’s candidate is not about one man’s ambition, but an African’s journey to serve the motherland... I am ready to serve, my heart is ready, my hands are steady and with your support, I shall get the opportunity to be of service to Africa, the cradle of mankind,” Raila affirmed.

Raila’s candidacy for the AUC chairmanship is a pivotal moment for Kenya and Africa as a whole. With his extensive experience and deep commitment to Pan-Africanism, Raila stands poised to lead the continent into a new era of unity, growth, and global relevance.
