Nairobi, Kenya – August 27, 2024: Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims of personal animosity between himself and Raila Odinga, emphasizing that their previous conflicts were rooted in political competition rather than personal disagreements. Gachagua made the remarks during the official unveiling of Raila's candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship at State House, Nairobi.
Political Competition, Not Personal Grudges
Addressing the crowd with a mix of sincerity and humor, Gachagua acknowledged the strained relationship he and Raila have had in the past but clarified that it was solely because they were vying for the same political space. "Somebody may ask, why is Rigathi Gachagua who has before had issues with the leadership of Raila... As a truthful man, I had nothing against him; it's only that we were competing for the same position between him and my boss," Gachagua stated, drawing laughter from the audience.
Endorsing Raila for AUC Leadership
Despite their past differences, Gachagua expressed his full support for Raila's AUC bid, lauding him as a qualified leader with the resilience, endurance, and perseverance necessary for the role. "Today we are going to unveil the transformation of Raila Odinga from a national leader to an African statesman. And for us in leadership, we have learnt great lessons of resilience, endurance, and perseverance," Gachagua noted.
The Deputy President assured Raila that he has the backing of the entire Kenyan government and the support of Kenyans across the political spectrum. "Now that he is going for a bigger seat in Africa, all of us, from the president, and the rest of Kenya are behind him," Gachagua said.
A Change of Heart
Gachagua also revealed that while he previously had reservations about Raila’s leadership, his perspective has since changed. He admitted that his earlier opposition was due to their competition for political power, but he now recognizes Raila's capacity to lead at a continental level. "I have listened to the ground and all Kenyans across the political divide and communities are in support of your candidature," Gachagua added, reinforcing his endorsement of Raila for the AUC role.
Raila and Gachagua's Evolving Relationship
Gachagua's statements come after months of speculation about the relationship between the two leaders, who have often been at odds politically. However, Raila himself has previously downplayed any personal animosity, citing his focus on the African Union Commission bid as the primary reason for working closely with the current government.
Raila had earlier described Gachagua as a "Saul who has now become a Paul," alluding to the transformation of their relationship from political rivalry to cooperation for a greater cause.
As Raila embarks on his campaign for the AUC chairmanship, he does so with the full endorsement of not only President William Ruto but also his former political adversary, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
