Ruiru, Kenya – A deadly road accident along Thika
Superhighway in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, has left multiple
people feared dead and others seriously injured. The incident occurred near Membley
estate, just meters from Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, casting a
shadow over the start of Easter weekend.
According to initial reports, a private saloon
car was traveling at high speed when it crashed into the rear of a stalled
trailer, which had allegedly not placed any warning signals for oncoming
motorists. The impact left the car completely mangled, with police and
emergency responders working tirelessly to rescue victims from the wreckage.
Overspeeding

The crash reportedly occurred around 2:30 a.m.,
with investigations pointing to overspeeding, non-functional street lighting,
and the lack of a reflective warning triangle as key contributing factors.
Police officers, backed by members of the
public, responded promptly to the distress call. Emergency services, including
an ambulance team, were present at the scene, conducting rescue and recovery
efforts as concerned residents gathered nearby.
Footage captured by eyewitnesses showed a
chaotic scene marked by urgency and distress. Several victims were rushed to
nearby hospitals, though the exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed as
investigations continue.

Festivities Overshadowed by Rising Road Fatalities
The accident comes during a time of heightened
travel across the country for the Easter holiday, when road traffic typically
surges. Unfortunately, it also coincides with an ongoing rise in road
fatalities that has plagued Kenyan highways in recent months.
In response, the National Transport and Safety
Authority (NTSA) recently launched a nationwide crackdown to stem the
increasing number of road accidents. NTSA Chairman Khatib Mwashetani, in a
recent address, stated that enforcement teams would be deployed along major
roads—including the Nairobi–Thika corridor—to monitor compliance with road
safety regulations.

Holiday Safety Directives Amid Crackdown
Ahead of the Easter celebrations, NTSA rolled
out six key safety measures, urging drivers to:
- 1.Observe speed limits diligently.
- 2.Avoid driving under the influence—dubbed the “silent hero of every
safe trip.”
- 3.Remove stalled vehicles promptly and install visible warning signs.
- 4.Plan travel ahead of time and rest adequately before long trips.
- 5.Ensure vehicle roadworthiness through proper servicing.
- 6.Report reckless driving using the NTSA hotline 911.
On Friday, NTSA revealed that the enforcement
initiative had already identified 19 cases of violations, including instances
of drunk driving along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
Despite these efforts, the Thika Road tragedy
highlights the persistent risks facing road users due to driver negligence, infrastructure
issues, and poor enforcement of safety protocols.
As the country marks Easter weekend,
authorities are calling on all motorists to prioritize safety and
responsibility to avoid further loss of life during this high-travel season
