Mombasa, Kenya – August 21, 2024: A suspected notorious carjacker was brought before the Mombasa Law Courts on Tuesday after being apprehended by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The man, accused of breaking into a vehicle and making away with Ksh1.4 million, was arrested in a coordinated operation that spanned from Mombasa to Nairobi.
The Heist and Arrest
The suspect allegedly committed the crime on June 26, 2024, in Mombasa, when he reportedly broke into a Nissan X-Trail parked outside a supermarket. According to a statement by the DCI, the car was accessed through the driver’s door, and the hefty sum of Ksh1.4 million was stolen. The brazen theft triggered an immediate manhunt by DCI detectives.
In a meticulously planned operation, DCI officers from Lang’ata tracked the suspect to his hideout in Nairobi, where they successfully arrested him. He was then handed over to the Changamwe DCI team, who promptly arraigned him at the Milimani Law Courts in Mombasa to face charges.
Public Advisory: Protecting Against Carjackers
As the DCI continues its crackdown on car-related crimes, the public has been urged to remain vigilant against carjackers. Vehicle prowling, also known as theft from motor vehicles, is on the rise, with thieves exploiting opportunities to steal valuables from parked cars.
The DCI has issued several safety tips for motorists to protect themselves and their vehicles. These include installing anti-theft devices, parking in well-lit and visible areas, and removing or hiding any items that may attract thieves before leaving the vehicle.
"Always remember to close your car windows and doors, lock your car, and take your keys with you," the DCI advised.
The DCI reassured Kenyans of its commitment to combating car break-ins and theft, emphasizing that those found guilty of such crimes will face the full force of the law.
